About
FANTASY FOOTBALL EXPERIENCE
My most vivid memories of early fantasy football involvement come from two different sources but from the same time period. My very first experience with fantasy football was in 1991-1992 when I played a salary cap type fantasy football league run by USA Today. Each player had a salary designation and you had 30 million dollars to fill out your weekly lineup. I remember checking the box scores in the cafeteria to see how my players did, this was pre-internet. I would look forward to receiving the weekly results in the mail on Tuesdays. Then in 1993, I met some like-minded fantasy football people while attending graduate school in Columbia South Carolina. We had in-person drafts and the scoring was limited just to touchdowns. I hated it. I thought there had to be a more effective scoring system that would reflect football knowledge rather than random touchdowns. Little did I know...
Then I graduated to offensive-only keeper leagues that utilized auctions, while maintaining a large presence in redraft-only leagues, then in 2018 I graduated to IDP dynasty leagues, this was the death of my interest in any sort of redraft or keeper leagues. Nothing else excited me except for deep deep leagues with large rosters to put to use all of this useless NFL knowledge.
Finally, I find myself carrying 13-14 leagues a year. All of which are higher stakes, with $100 up to $300 entry fee, IDP dynasty leagues, mostly 14 to 16-team leagues, all the way to 32-team leagues with duplicate copies of players. More than half are DT, TE premium leagues, so I've gotten to immerse myself in the process of scouting Defensive Tackles.
After years and years of trials and tribulations, I formed a list of dos and don'ts and removed emotions about players from my decision-making making which has allowed me to reach a place over the past 10 or so years where I am consistently winning enough in my leagues to pay for this hobby through league winnings with a good bit left over for discretionary spending.
I still make horrible unconscionable decisions (even after researching and deliberating) that stay with me far longer than the right decisions I've made, like dropping RB Kyren Williams in the 2023 off-season to make room for someone I can't remember! I mean he ran a 5.0 FORTY, played 0.0 snaps, and couldn't beat out Darrell Henderson for god's sake! PS My good friend picked him up for nothing and won the league championship, I placed third.
ATHLETIC/COACHING EXPERIENCE
I've enjoyed teaching and coaching from an early age. We were offered the opportunity to be paid coaches of 5th/6th-grade flag football while a junior and senior varsity football player in high school. I remember waking up with that satisfying soreness feeling from the Friday night games the next morning and coaching those young kids, on Saturdays. I have coached high school track and football at public high schools in Michigan, Minnesota, and Georgia.
I excelled in high school track and football and also played basketball. I failed to have a clear focus as you could say I suffered from maturity issues during my early college career. I was kicked out for poor academic performance and became a medic in the army reserve, then worked my way back through community college. When I finally found my focus my sophomore year. I walked on a division I MAC school football team as a 7th-string fullback and had one undistinguished year, which ended with a shoulder injury. I learned that I enjoyed playing in football games rather than only practicing for them.
I played one year of semi-pro football in Columbia, South Carolina, as a player-coach. The end of my football career aspirations was confirmed at a week-long NFL/CFL/NFL EUROPE league pro free agent tryout camp held in West Virginia which I enjoyed but ultimately learned that I was indeed a scrub at that level.
